New U.K. Entry Requirements in 2025

Beginning in 2025, visitors to the United Kingdom will need a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), regardless of the purpose of the visit.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA is a new entry requirement for visitors from certain countries, similar to the ESTA for the USA or the ETA for Canada.

Do I need one?

Currently, many travellers including those from The United States, Canada, and E.U. nationals visiting the UK for short stays, and unless applying to work, generally need only present their valid passport upon arrival. This is changing effective January, 2025. There is a phased introduction of the ETA.

  • Non-EU nationals (including from visa free countries like the U.S. and Canada) will need either a UK ETA or a visa to travel to the UK, depending on the length and purpose of the visit. Please check the UK Government website for more information. Non-EU nationals can apply for a UK ETA now, for travel to the UK on or after January 8, 2025.

  • EU nationals can apply for a UK ETA from March 5, 2025, to enter the UK on or after April 2, 2025.

  • British or Irish nationals, diplomats and those already granted permission to enter or remain in the country, will not need a UK ETA to travel to the UK.

Useful information

  • How long a UK ETA lasts: It is valid for two years and permits visits to the UK for up to 6 months. Valid for entry by air, land and sea.

  • UK ETA fee: £10 fee (approx. 13 USD)

  • How long it takes to receive UK ETA: Approximately 3 working days.

  • Traveling with children: Every family member needs their own UK ETA, regardless of age.

  • New/multiple passports: A new UK ETA will be needed when issued with a new passport. Those with more than one passport must travel with the passport linked to the UK ETA.
